Howard County Police Department Adopts Two Head Start Programs

Howard County Police have adopted the Head Start programs in Ellicott City and at the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, two of the four Head Start programs run by the Community Action Council of Howard County. Head Start, created by the Community Action Council of Howard County, provides free pre-school to eligible 3- to 5-year-old children. Programs provide family engagement services, speech & language therapy, mental health consulting, hearing & vision screening, nutritional counseling, and limited transportation. Head Start is a part of a national program administered by the Office of Head Start, Administration for Children and Families, Federal Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start’s goal is to promote the school readiness of children by enhancing their cognitive, social/emotional development.

Howard County Police Officers visit the programs on a regular basis to read to the children and play games with them. In March, Lt. Stephanie Wall, Cpl. Ryan McCrone and Pfc. Jessica Morgan spent the morning at the Ellicott City Head Start to read to students and join in some games. On Tuesday, July 11th, officers visited the Ellicott City and First Presbyterian Head Start programs and handed out art supplies and toys to the children. The Howard County Police Foundation donated $1,500 to purchase the gifts.
